Course Description:

In this course, students will explore the interactions of organisms in ecosystems and the mechanisms of evolution that give rise to the variety of life forms on Earth. Students will gain an overview of ecosystem structure, its processes, and the various biomes of the biosphere. Groups of organisms will be discussed in terms of their fundamental roles in ecosystems. The course will also address the impact of human activities on disturbing biodiversity and biogeochemical cycles. Laboratory exercises will introduce students to practical aspects of biology such as the application of the scientific method in biological experimentation while enabling students to explore topics in evolution and biodiversity further.

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to the study of Calculus, particularly single-variable Differential Calculus. Students will be introduced to the concepts of the limit, continuity, and the derivative and will learn how these concepts relate to tangent lines to curves and to rates of change. Students will learn how to compute derivatives using a variety of common rules and techniques. Students will apply the concept of the derivative in applications such as curve-sketching, optimization, and the analysis of rates of change. An introduction to antiderivatives and indefinite integrals will prepare students for the transition to the study of Integral Calculus.

Course Description:

Mechanics is the first course in the physics sequence. The course focuses on describing various types of motion and explaining the laws governing motion using both forces and conservation laws. In the lab, students will develop experimental physics skills such as the estimation of uncertainties, acquisition and analysis of data by computer, scientific writing and collaboration. Topics include kinematics in one dimension, two dimensions and for circular motion, force, friction, torque, Newton’s laws, work, and power as well as conservation laws for energy, linear momentum and angular momentum.

Course Description:

This course will introduce students to the basic building blocks (sequential, conditional, and repetitive control structures), modules (functions and libraries) and basic data types and structures used to write a software program. The students will learn how to analyze problems encountered in a scientific context, and then design, implement, and test algorithms.

Course Description:

This course provides the first chemistry component of the CEGEP-level chemistry program. Students will analyze quantitively chemical and physical changes in matter using concepts associated with the structure of atoms and molecules. Emphasis on problem-solving will introduce students to Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Industrial Chemistry.
