Return to play at Golf Classic 2022
After an absence of two years, the revitalized Dawson golf tournament made a triumphant return on June 7 at the Summerlea Golf and Country Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion. Renamed the Golf Classic, the tournament reunited long-standing participants, suppliers and new recruits.
The weather that had appeared ominous in the morning cleared in time for tee off and the rain held off until everyone was back in the clubhouse for drinks and dinner late in the afternoon. When all was said and done, more than $35,000 was raised to help the Financial Aid Office at Dawson lift some of the financial burdens off students in need.
The Golf Classic is organized by the Dawson Foundation as part of its mission to raise funds that benefit students directly. With the rising costs of inflation being felt in every sector of society, students need support more than ever so they may reach their full academic potential.
A lively mix of new and familiar plus celebrities
The Dawson Golf Classic saw the return of noted foursome and Dawson retirees Ray Boucher, Drago Kresevic, Paul Rastelli and Dave Nagels, who were instrumental in creating and organizing Dawson鈥檚 first 12 tournaments. Under the honorary patronage of former Dawson registrars Peter McAuslan and Ellen Bounsall who went on to found St-Ambroise Brewing and McAuslan Spirits, the Golf Classic also welcomed special guests including former Montreal Canadien St茅phane Richer who celebrated his birthday with us, RDS on-air and online personality Val茅rie Sardin, and women鈥檚 sports advocate Isabelle 脡thier. Montreal comic Franco Taddeo emceed the evening鈥檚 event.
The best news of the night, aside from the money raised, was the privilege of calling the Golf Classic completely carbon-neutral. Sustainable Dawson鈥檚 Annie Quadros made an impassioned speech about how the data she collected from attendees amounted to 6.79mts of CO2 emissions generated from the day鈥檚 activities, including electricity, transportation, and food. By the time of next year鈥檚 tournament, Dawson will have offset these emissions by adding 611 trees to the College鈥檚 total of 45,000 trees already growing in Nicaragua as part of its pledge to be carbon neutral forever.
Collaboration and spirit pay off
The Classic came together as a result of the hard work of the Foundation and Communications Offices, and the support and assistance of Steve Hatajlo, Foundation Board Chair and Board of Governors member, Jorge Sanchez from FAMA, Foundation Board members Claudia Mastrocola and Sean Smith, who also serves on the Board of Governors and sponsored the carbon neutral exercise, as well as Ken Doran, a long-time friend of the tournament. An army of volunteers helped to pull off the day鈥檚 activities at Summerlea. A huge thank you to you all.
