International Day of Mathematics is celebrated on March 10
The Mathematics Department is inviting you to celebrate the International Day of Mathematics on Friday, March 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m in Room 5B.16

- On Three Geometric Enigmas of Antiquity- Professor Shahab Shahabi

Abstract: We shall explore the impossibility of the geometric construction by ruler and compass of: (i) Doubling the Cube, (ii) Trisecting the Angle, and (iii) Squaring the Circle. The solutions (mainly due to Gauss) to these very old problems gave birth to the modern theory of algebraic field extensions.

- Unique Factorization of Polynomials and Partial Fractions – Professor Alexander Hariton

Abstract: In this talk, I will prove that a nonconstant real polynomial can be uniquely expressed as a product of linear and irreducible quadratic monic factors times a constant. I will then show how any proper rational function can be expressed as a sum of partial fractions.
