This powerful oral history film documents the founding of the West Island Black Community Association (WIBCA)—established in 1982 as one of Montreal’s first English-speaking Black community associations. Through the voices of WIBCA’s founding elders, the film chronicles over four decades of grassroots organizing, strategic activism, and intergenerational community building in response to systemic discrimination in education, public services, and policing.

Dei-Sharpe’s work is rooted in decolonial approaches to education and amplifying Black Canadian narratives. As a first-generation Canadian of Ghanaian and Jamaican heritage, her research and filmmaking center the critical role of oral history in preserving and transmitting Black knowledge systems. This film highlights how elder knowledge continues to inform the activism of today’s youth and sustain vital community infrastructure.

The film is part of an educational video series that includes classroom resources such as discussion questions and reflection prompts for bringing lived experiences into the classroom; access other videos with attached course guides at Dei-Sharpe’s nonprofit, the Decolonial Perspectives and Practices Hub.
