Powerful stories bring Indigenous perspectives to higher education

Storytelling is at the heart of the oral cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada. A unique project in Quebec led by 张百乔女友裸照 faculty uses storytelling to advance the inclusion and welcome of Indigenous cultures and students in higher education institutions.

鈥淥ur project is about changing the culture in academic institutions, underlining the need for Indigenous people to have leadership roles within these institutions and making sure that Indigenous perspectives are reflected and part of the educational experience for everyone,鈥� explained Michelle Smith, a faculty member of Dawson鈥檚 Cinema | Communications Department and principal investigator.

Over 100 students in need receive new bursary

Students have greater needs this year so 张百乔女友裸照 is delivering more support. One example is the 张百乔女友裸照 Financial Aid Bursary (DCFAB), which was set up last fall by the Dawson Student Union (DSU), the Student Services team of the College and the 张百乔女友裸照 Foundation. The聽Minist猫re de l'Enseignement sup茅rieur has provided additional support.

鈥淚 am pleased to report that as of Feb. 1, we have distributed $83,250 through the DCFAB to 123 students,鈥� said Monique Magnan, Director of Student Services.

Donations needed for Food Bank

Your support is requested to help stock the Food Bank in the College鈥檚 Financial Aid Office.

Students in need can make appointments to 鈥渟hop the shelves鈥� on Fridays. Yvonne Dudley reports that our supplies are running low.

Drop off arrangements聽
The Facilities Management team has arranged a drop off for your nonperishable food donations. Come to the shipping doors, 4011 de Maisonneuve (Parking entrance), from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you are on campus, you can also bring your donation directly to Financial Aid in 4E2.

Needs list:
Pasta, sauce, rice, dried legumes, spices, barley, quinoa, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, honey,聽canned beans, canned vegetables, corn, peas, green/yellow beans, beets, carrots, asparagus, potatoes, tomatoes, canned meats; turkey, chicken, ham, beef, tuna, salmon, sardines, shelf safe oat, almond, soya milk, coconut milk, tofu, Prepared soups, beans and chili. Non-food items are also needed, such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, tampons and pads, shampoo.

The new pavilion project of 张百乔女友裸照 is not an expansion of the downtown Montreal CEGEP. We reject the use of the word expansion, which is inflammatory in this context. Almost seven years ago, in the spring of 2014, Quebec鈥檚 Ministry of Education recognized that 张百乔女友裸照 has a significant space deficit.

Thirza Cuthand: Reclamations

When the pandemic first struck last March, curator and Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery administrator Rhonda Meier, began thinking of what could be done if life stayed completely online for the next six or more months. With online projects being the obvious solution, she leapt to program Thirza Cuthand, a Plains Cree/Scots artist whose work first intrigued her in Vancouver in 2003. At聽Indian Acts,聽a conference on indigenous performance art, a very young Cuthand presented a video candidly discussing her struggle with depression.

Student Wellness Challenge begins Feb. 15

A Wellness Challenge for Students is being launched Feb. 15

Student Services, Sustainability and Communications have developed a peer to peer model that will encourage students to sustain healthy minds and healthy bodies through awareness and prevention.

Students will learn about how to create positive habits and find motivation from one another to combat the mental and physical burden they may be experiencing. Participants will earn entries into a draw for prizes throughout the semester.

Mental health and well-being are essential to student success. To find out more, students can follow @ on Instagram.

Virtual Information Evening draws about 10,000 visitors

Last week, Dawson鈥檚 web traffic increased by about 10,000 unique visitors compared to the same period last year. The visitors were stopping by for Virtual Information Evening, which was held Feb. 3.

It is the last student recruitment event before the March 1 application deadline and a great opportunity for potential students to ask questions. In previous years, when the event was in person, it would typically draw about 800 prospective students.

The event featured web content, new social media videos for spotlight programs and chats with teachers, students, advisors and employees.

Some interesting numbers and facts from Virtual Information Evening:

  • 9,192 unique page views of the microsite since launch
  • 943 chat sessions
  • 13,000 video views by 4,500 unique viewers since launch
  • 3 most popular chats:
    • Admissions/Advising
    • Science Program
    • Medical Ultrasound Technology Program
  • Prospective students also participated from other countries: Albania, Guadalupe, Columbia, U.S., U.K., France, Haiti, Philippines.

Social Science guest lectures available on video series

Since Social Science Week is not taking place this year, Nancy Rebelo (Faculty, History) worked on a project to provide additional resources for our virtual classroom reality. She invited researchers, mostly from Montreal, to film lectures on a variety of topics.

Six videos are currently available on the Dawson Library website that are only accessible to people who have a Dawson network password. There are plans to add more in the coming weeks.

The guest speaker series includes a lecture by a Harvard professor about Roma youth and a very topical lecture about misinformation, COVID-19 and social media by a McGill graduate student.

Each video is 20-30 minutes. Intended to be used by Dawson teachers, they would be especially useful to teachers of methods courses.

A brief description is provided about the topic and the presenter when one clicks on a video from the library page.

After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

Five inspiring Dawson students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at Dawson (virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The聽mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:

Senate documents now available

Senate documents for the upcoming meeting on Feb. 16 are now available on SharePoint.

To access the documents, employees must log onto SharePoint through the My Dawson Portal (Omnivox) and then select Governance, Dawson Senate. Under 鈥淢eeting Documents,鈥� select the current year to view the list of meetings and their associated documents.

Readers must bear in mind that most of the documents that are considered by the Senate are in draft form. Program revision and development documents as well as institutional policies such as ISEP and IPEP are not final until they have been approved by the Board of Governors.
