Cin | Comm’s Dipti Gupta presenting doc at Chicago film fest
Cinema | Communications’ Dipti Gupta is headed to Chicago this month for a screening of her documentary film Marginalizing Minorities.
Dipti’s film was chosen by the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, running from Sept. 22-25, 2022. Marginalizing Minorities was shot in India in December 2019 and January 2020 and was edited in Montreal by Karan Singh. The film was supported with contributions from ŰŮ and Concordia University, where Dipti also teaches.
“As a member of the diaspora, I feel it is my responsibility to critique consciously the place I live in but also the place I grew up,” said Dipti, Profile Coordinator of Cinema | Communications and a teacher at Dawson since 2001.
Dipti had this to say about her film: “As India continues its shift to the right, this documentary shares vignettes of discussions with various grassroots artists, activists, historians and people representing the majority, as the country spoke up against the proposed discriminatory citizenship laws in India in 2019-2020. Documented before the COVID pandemic, the government of India has since withdrawn the proposed laws, but the battle for justice and the identity of the Indian nation continues.”
