Academic Standing and Advancement Policy

To be in good standing and to register unconditionally, students must meet the requirements of the College Academic Standing and Advancement Policy, as well as the Program requirements.

Program policy

Academic Standing

Students who have 4 outstanding failures in program specific (concentration) courses will be expelled.

Advancement

In order to advance to the 3rd term Civil Engineering Technology (221) discipline courses:

  • Students cannot have more than 2 program specific (concentration) courses聽outstanding from year 1
  • Students cannot have more than 1 General Education course outstanding from year 1

In order to advance to the 5th term, students cannot:

  • have any outstanding courses from year 1
  • have more than 2 program specific (concentration) courses outstanding from year 2
  • Students cannot have more than one General Education course outstanding from year 2

Students must have passed the Construction Health and Safety course (311-912-DW) and obtained the A.S.P. Construction safety card in order to take the Stage Preparation course (221-491-DW).

Students who are prevented from advancing in their concentration courses will be allowed to take General Education, Mathematics and Physics courses and must submit a request for permission to resume studies or a program transfer before the subsequent semester (Fall or Winter Term).

The Program Coordinator may recommend an exception to Standing and Advancement decisions in extenuating circumstances to the Sector Dean.

Students who fail to comply with this Standing Policy will be expelled from the program and the College.

Expelled students have the right to appeal the expulsion to the College Academic Standing Appeals Committee.

Professional Conduct

Students are expected to exhibit appropriate behaviour referred to as “professional conduct”. Professional conduct must be displayed in all activities associated with the program. Students must be respectful of property and safety regulations. Students must display consistent courtesy, teamwork and cooperative behaviour.

Students who exhibit inappropriate behaviour may be removed from the program. The procedure for removing students from the program on the basis of professional conduct will be applies in accordance with the College’s Institutional Student Evaluation Policy (ISEP).

Some examples of inappropriate behaviour are:

  • Malicious, inappropriate or dangerous use of equipment;
  • Display of behaviour detrimental to the learning or work environment (continual rudeness, interference with other students’ learning, etc.);
  • Unethical practices, including falsification of data, misappropriation of other’s work, unauthorized copying and distribution of software, destruction of other students’ work;
  • Refusal to follow instructions given by staff faculty or site supervisors regarding safe use of equipment, laboratory facilities and while in the field;
  • Disregard for public and private property.

Students who have been expelled on the basis of Professional Conduct may appeal the decision to the Academic Dean.
