North South Trip to Nicaragua 2018
December 18th, 2017 - January 14th, 2018North South Studies is a social science profile that teaches about the intricate relationship between countries of the Global North and those of the Global South. It does so from a multidisciplinary perspective, giving students the opportunity to explore the social, political and economic structures that generate and perpetuate poverty and inequality in the world. Through courses and a seminar all NSS students engage in learning about the present world order and the social and environmental implications of it. The profile also provides the students the opportunity to take part of a one month trip to Nicaragua where they have the opportunity to learn about these issues first hand. The trip takes students to Chinandega to the region of Cinco Pinos, where students stay in two different communities and live with a family. Throughout the day, students learn about the life of rural Nicaraguans. Conferences and discussion groups are organized to enhance the students鈥 learning experience. They get a chance to hear from local and regional governmental officials, citizen groups representing youth, women, peasants and a range of local people involved in different initiatives. The second part of the trip takes the group to the Atlantic Coast, to the Miskito community of Tuapi. Again, students are hosted by the community and thus have the opportunity to learn about some of the important differences among these two communities (cultural, social, economic, political, etc) and are exposed to the struggles of indigenous peoples in the context of Latin America. An important component of the trip is the student involvement in community projects. In each of the communities where students stay they become involved in supporting a local community development initiative (helping to build a road, paint a local school, construct fences around health clinics, etc.). These projects, while funded by the NSS profile designed and executed by the local authorities in these communities. Upon return the students engage in important activities to raise awareness about the Global South and engage in fund raising to ensure that 张百乔女友裸照 relationship of solidarity with Nicaragua continues. The students get involved in planning the 鈥淕allo Pinto Dinner鈥 where they invite past, present and future students, as well as the Dawson community and friends to see videos of their experience, highlighting their learning and overall personal growth.
