Participating 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Industrial Design students assembled together in Conrod’s to compete in three distinct design categories. Industrial designers (Alumni) were invited to judge the student projects in the following categories:

1. Cardboard Seating: Design a portable, easy to assemble (under 5 minutes) seat for outdoor festivals. It must have an area for advertising and be easy to carry. 2. Lighting Design: Design a light fixture that can serve 2 purposes, ambient and direct lighting that cannot disturb another person next to you.
3. Kitchenware Design: Redesign an existing product to be easier to use, clean and store in the kitchen.
The first judge, Cameron Samois from PropMaster, graduated from the Industrial Design program in 2013. The second judge, Andres Delgado came from Surface I.D. and he graduated in May of 2015.

All the students in the program got the chance to see each other projects, to present, critique and learn from each other. Having judges who are currently working in the field and who also graduated from the program brought a lot of insight to the students, who are anxious to know how their projects compare to industry standards. 1st year projects had to be assembled from people in the audience who have never seen the cardboard seating projects. These experiences showed them how designs can fail or succeed depending on how they implement visual cues. 2nd and 3rd years were able to receive critiques from outsiders (other than their own classmates and teachers) which have been known to be strong motivators for students in such a demanding program.
