Fashion Photography Workshop in Havana Cuba

March 9th - 16th, 2018

A fashion photography workshop for Photography students in Havana Cuba is planned for this coming March break. Local models and makeup artists will be hired for three out of the seven days.

The images produced by the students and faculty will be exhibited at Dawson and will become part of other department displays. Additionally, we are hoping that the student work will find its way into photography competitions and into professional and educational photography publications given the uniqueness of the project. Because the format of this workshop is different from others that we have had in the past, we are looking at creating partnerships with people in Cuba for future workshops.

Project Update

9 Professional Photography students set out with two teachers, Laurel Breidon and David Hopkins, on what is a first for the department, a fashion photography workshop in Havana Cuba.Upon arrival, the students were greeted with great enthusiasm by their host Alejandro. The group stayed in a former colonial mansion, which would later serve as a backdrop for one of the demonstrations. On their first full day, the students took a tour of the city in order to look for areas of the city that would be interesting for them to photograph in. The decision was made to return to the area of Havana Centro the following day on foot to scout the area for backgrounds more closely. The following morning the students set out with David Hopkins. We worked in collaboration with local modeling agency , Cuba Modela. In the afternoon the students returned and took part in an outdoor demonstration that took place in the Estadio Jose Marti. We worked with a local hair and make-up artist as well as a model from Cuba Modela. The following day the students went to see a mansion location that had been rented for the group to photograph in, the Casa Josee Alonso. Later in the afternoon, there was a second demonstration given in the Mansion that the group was staying in.The next day the group set out again with models, hair and make-up and clothing in tow. The day was spent photographing our beautiful models in a wonderful setting with richly textured backgrounds. Our schedule was fast paced so the last day was spent relaxing, one group going to the beach and another returning to old Havana to photograph a group of young boxers at the Gimnasio de Boxeo Raphael Trejo. The group met later in the day to review the photos that they had taken and to go to a farewell dinner with the director of the modeling agency, Rocio Serrano Montes. Overall the trip was a success. Many great images were taken and the students had a wonderful experience. Here is an article on the PDN.edu blog about our Havana Fashion Workshop.
